Diabetes Service

• Diabetes occurs when there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. 
• This happens because:
• the pancreas stops producing insulin (Type 1 diabetes)
• or the insulin produced is not effective in transporting glucose from the blood to the body's cells (Type 2 diabetes)
• ​Diabetes can cause serious health problems (damage to the eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves, feet) if it is not well controlled. 
• Good diabetes care can reduce the risk of developing these complications.

Diabetes services for young adults

The WDHB diabetes service offers a dedicated service for young adults aged 16-25yrs living with any type of diabetes. We have clinics in West Auckland -Whanau centre clinic, Henderson and at the North Shore Hospital diabetes clinic, Takapuna.

Those attending the clinic either transition from paediatric services (Starship), move into the area or are newly diagnosed with diabetes. 

We offer clinic appointments (Doctor, Nurse and Dietitian), group education courses to help with self-management skills, a clinical health psychologist & have access to many more support services.

We aim to support the young adult as they gain greater independence with diabetes management and develop good support systems as they move through adolescence into adulthood.
