Research Locality

Locality review assesses a site's suitability for safe and effective conduct of a research study. The National Ethics Advisory Committee (NEAC) standards require all health research, audit and related activity to be registered and approved by the host institution (locality).

Step 1 - Registration

  • Complete a Locality Application Form and submit with the protocol/proposal
  • Initiate Māori Research Assessment
  • Undertake other relevant cultural and community consultation
  • Initiate Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā legal review for any research related contracts (including pre-award MOUs). Our DHB supports the use of NZ Standardised Clinical Trial Agreements. Download these directly from the NZACRes website.
  • Researcher should proceed with Institutional (IEC) or Health & Disability Ethics Committee (HDEC) process where required.

Step 2 - Approval process

  • Checklist of Locality requirements will be emailed to the Primary Contact (within 7 days of registration)
  • Any protocols that include administration of medicines must be reviewed by a Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā pharmacist
  • Costings for Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā involvement (including staff time or other resources) must be provided to the Manager to inform their authorisation (even when there will be no exchange of funding)
  • Return all completed documentation to the Research & Knowledge Centre.
  • A final email indicating approval to commence will be sent to the Primary Contact once all relevant approvals & documentation has been received by the Research & Knowledge Centre. No research, audit or related activity can commence prior to receiving this email.

Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā welcomes collaboration with external researchers. Many grant applications are now submitted online, and require processing by the 'Research Office' prior to submission to the funder.  Notify the Research & Knowledge Centre as early as possible of your intention to apply for a grant. This is particularly important for HRC grants (minimum two weeks' notice required).

Any MoUs that are written as part of a grant contract need to be reviewed by the Waitematā Legal Advisors.

Direct all grant enquiries to Dr Victoria Andersen +64 9 486 8920 extn 43611
