Specialist care for babies who are born early or become unwell
The neonatal units at North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals care for sick babies and premature infants
Deliveries before 32 weeks' gestation would normally be delivered at Auckland City Hospital
While in Special Care, a paediatrician is in charge of baby's care in the nursery
The nurses in the Special Care Nursery all have training and experience in the care of sick babies

If your baby is very premature and needs the assistance of a ventilator (breathing machine), he/she will be transferred for care at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) such as at Auckland City Hospital
Rangatira Children’s Ward (Waitakere Hospital)
For when your child is sick and needs hospital assessment and care
Rangatira Paediatric Ward is a children’s medical ward for children aged 0-14 years who are referred by GPs and emergency doctors for medical care
Rangatira Ward is staffed by paediatricians and children’s nurses to deliver specialist care for Waitemata children
Children with surgical or orthopaedic problems should still be referred by doctors directly to Starship Children’s Hospital
Your referring GP or emergency doctor should discuss any questions directly with the paediatrician at the hospital
